Patchouli has been a much-prized herb in the East since ancient times. It was used to scent linen and clothes. It reached the West in the 19th century when it was used to perfume paisley shawls.

It is still used extensively in modern perfumery and was worn alone as the symbol of peace and love by hippies during the sixties.

Extraction: Patchouli essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dried leaves and shoots of the bushy herb.

Pure Patchouli essential oil has a woody, earthy, sweet smell that is pungent and persistent.

Aroma: Patchouli essential oil is heady, sensual, woody and musky.

Fragrance note: Base.

Properties: Patchouli essential oil is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. The aroma is both stimulating and soothing. It is used in aromatherapy for tiredness and tension. It rejuvenates and balances the skin.

Uses: Massage, baths, inhalation, vaporization, poultice and compress.

Patchouli essential oil makes a relaxing or energising body massage, a therapeutic head and scalp massage and a good facial for oily or dry skin. Add few drops to a bath to stimulate and more to relax.

Blends well with: Bergamot, Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Clove, Coriander, Frankincense, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemongrass, May Chang, Mandarin, Myrrh, Neroli, Oakmoss, Opopanax, Orange, Rose, Sandalwood and Vetiver.

Caution: Patchouli essential oil is perfectly safe for home use as long as it is diluted properly before application.
